Pennington leads Jets to win over Vikings

Football Betting Lines

12/18/2006 - Minneapolis, MN (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chad Pennington rebounded after a brutal loss last week to Buffalo by completing 29-of-39 passes for 339 yards with a touchdown and an interception, as the New York Jets bested the Minnesota Vikings, 26-13, at the Metrodome.

"Kudos to our team for really bonding together and coming together this week after a tough loss last week," said Pennington. "We put together a winning effort and that's what it's all about. This game is such a team game and it takes everyone involved. This win started on Wednesday with a really good day of practice, and then we kept practicing better and better throughout the week. The guys were really honed on what we needed to do to get a win."

Laveranues Coles tied a career-high with 12 receptions, gaining 144 yards, with a TD while Cedric Houston had 21 carries for 53 yards and a score for the Jets (8-6), who have won five straight meetings.

Mike Nugent booted four field goals for New York, which won its third straight road game for the first time since a five-game streak to begin the 2001 season.

"I was very proud of the way our team prepared this week," said New York head coach Eric Mangini. "I was proud of the approach they took and the energy level we had going into the game. To come out and have the early strip-sack and get the early touchdown, we really put that adversity behind us and played pretty good football from there on in."

Brad Johnson was 10-fo-17 for 96 yards with a touchdown before being replaced in the fourth quarter by Tarvaris Jackson, who went 14-of-23 for 177 yards with a TD and an interception for the Vikings (6-8), who have lost two of their last three games.

Travis Taylor hauled in six passes for 81 yards with a touchdown and Mewelde Moore made five catches for 53 yards with a score for Minnesota. Napoleon Harris made three tackles, intercepted a pass and forced a fumble in the contest. Chester Taylor returned after missing the last game and gained 38 yards on 11 carries.

"This is a game of staying on the field and getting off the field," said Minnesota head coach Brad Childress. "I didn't think we did either particularly well. They were 7-of-13 on third down conversions and we were only 2-of-11. We've got to stay on the field and we've got to find a way to get off the field. Mathematically we're still in it. We've got 100 hours to prepare for this game against a big opponent on Thursday night on national television, so we've got to get over this one a lot faster."

After Pennington fumbled on the second offensive play of the game, the Vikings needed only three plays to get on the scoreboard.

On 3rd-and-6 at the Jets 30, New York brought eight men on the blitz and Johnson found Taylor, who beat Andre Dyson with one-on-one coverage for the touchdown and a 7-0.

The Jets responded with a 12-play, 67-yard drive, highlighted by Brad Smith's 19-yard reception on 2nd-and-10 at the New York 43. Seven plays later Houston barreled his way through the defensive line for a six-yard touchdown run, tying the score 7-7.

The Jets pushed the score to 10-7 in the second with a 25-yard Nugent field goal. The drive started at their own 44 but on the first play B.J. Askew made a nine-yard catch before Ben Leber was hit with a 15-yard face-mask penalty, giving New York the ball at the 32.

Even though the Jets couldn't get the running game going, the Vikings couldn't stop the offense, which relied heavily on short passes. New York converted two huge third downs, including Jerricho Cotchery's 17-yard catch on 3rd-and-6 and Coles' 21-yard scoring grab for a 17-7 margin.

Leon Washington's 38-yard punt return gave the Jets excellent field position, and Nugent capped the drive with a 52-yarder for a 20-7 lead.

After Ryan Longwell missed a 49-yard field goal wide right with 46 ticks on the clock, New York quickly got into Nugent's range, as he booted a 45-yarder as time expired for a 23-7 halftime lead.

On the Jets' first possession of the third quarter, they ate up more than 7 1/2 minutes off the clock, as Nugent kicked his fourth field goal of the day, a 20-yarder. Justin McCareins 20-yard catch on 3rd-and-11 gave New York a 1st- and-goal from the 1, but two straight running plays couldn't cross the goal line.

Minnesota finally broke the streak of 27 unanswered points in the fourth with Jackson at the helm, as he found Moore with a screen pass that went 35 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion failed and the Jets led 26-13 with under 6 1/2 minutes to play.

The Vikings couldn't recover the onside kick, but three plays later Harris picked off Pennington. Jackson had success getting Minnesota into scoring position, but David Barrett intercepted a pass on the goal line.

Why Sports Betting is so much fun?

Betting Sports

The most popular sports to bet on are NFL and college football along with NBA and NCAA basketball. There are multiple betting opportunities within those sports, beginning with the basic wager on a game’s outcome (also called betting the side). College Football Point spreads are used in both football and basketball in an attempt to even the attractiveness of each team in a match-up. ( See our article detailing how and why point spreads are made)

But you could also simply bet on the money line, or straight-up winner of the game. Oddsmakers use the money line so that more money must be risked on the favorite or expected winner and less money on the underdog to balance the action on both sides. While money line gambling is an attractive option for football and basketball bettors who only care about picking a winner, it is the primary option for those bettors who enjoy wagering on MLB baseball and individual sports like boxing, tennis, golf and racing events such as NASCAR. ( More details on playing the Money Line)

Points (or Runs) Scored

Another bet across all major team sports including football, basketball, baseball, and hockey involves wagering on the amount of scoring in a game, called an Over/Under total. For example, the Over/Under total on Super Bowl XXXIX was 48, which means a bettor could wager whether there would be more or less than 48 points scored by both teams combined in the game.

The final score of Super Bowl XXXIX was 24-21; the scoring of both teams added up to 45, which means the game went Under . So Under bettors won, and Over bettors lost.

Future Bets

Sports gambling doesn’t end there. Betting sides and totals are the most common wagers available everywhere, but many sportsbooks also offer future bets on big upcoming events like who will win next year’s Super Bowl and what movie will win Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

The main advantage of futures is that you can get appealing odds by betting far in advance. For example, with NFL futures you often can get much higher odds on a team by betting before the season even starts. A NFL future bet on a team to win the Super Bowl odds might be 20/1 in the preseason; but by midseason, their odds might decrease to 10/1 if they turn out to be legitimate championship contenders.

Proposition Bets (or Prop Bets)

Proposition bets , also known as prop bets, focus upon the more exotic aspects of a game and are generally reserved for events that are widely televised. Prop bets are extremely popular when it comes to wagering on the Super Bowl in Las Vegas. The Imperial Palace Casino’s sportsbook is well-known for the enormous number of prop bets offered. For example, you can bet on:

Types of Bets

Straight Bet

Involves one individual wager, whether it be on your team to cover the point spread, to win the game straight-up on the money line, or to go over/under the total.

Sports Betting Parlays

A parlay is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. The benefit of the parlay bet is much better odds than placing each individual bet separately since the difficulty of hitting it is much higher.

Standard payoffs on a two-team parlay are 13/5; while a three-teamer pays 6/1; and a four-teamer 10/1.

Parlay cards are also fairly common in sportsbooks and popular with bettors, as they are released early in the week with set odds that do not change in return for a slightly lower payoff.

Round Robin Betting

Adventurous bettors who enjoy betting parlays sometimes put together a series of parlays called a Round Robin . A three-team Round Robin consists of one three-team parlay and three two-team parlays. For example, Joe likes teams A,B,C – with a Round Robin he has a three-teamer with ABC, and two-teamers with AB, AC, and BC.

Betting Teasers

Similar to a parlay, a teaser bet is a single bet that links together two or more individual wagers, but is different in that the point spread is adjusted to your advantage on each individual wager. In exchange for the points, you get less of a return on your bet compared to a parlay. For example, a 6-point teaser would move the line on a 7-point favorite from -7 to -1, meaning the team would have to cover 6 less points. Each of the individual wagers must win or the bet is a loss.

These are the main types of sports bets available today. But as sports betting continues to grow, sportsbooks will continue to develop new and creative ways to bet. We’ll continue to track these changes to the sports gambling landscape, so check back often and we’ll tell you all about it!
