Pack beats Lions despite three Favre INTs

Football Betting Lines

12/17/2006 - Green Bay, WI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Vernand Morency rushed for 54 yards and two scores as the Green Bay Packers held on to defeat the Detroit Lions 17-9 at Lambeau Field.

Ahman Green ran for 79 yards on 22 carries and Brett Favre was 20-of-37 passing for 174 yards and three interceptions as Green Bay (6-8) won for only the second time in their last five games.

Donald Driver caught seven passes for 70 yards for the Packers.

Jason Hanson kicked three field goals for the Lions only points. Jon Kitna was 16-of-26 passing for 135 yards and two interceptions as Detroit (2-12) has lost six straight games.

Mike Williams grabbed three balls for 42 yards and Arlen Harris had five catches for 33 yards.

In a game filled with miscues, the Packers committed five turnovers, while the Detroit turned the ball over four times.

The Lions got on the scoreboard on their second offensive possession. Starting on their own 46-yard line, Kitna orchestrated an eight-play, 30-yard drive, completing all four pass attempts. Jason Hanson capped the series with a 42- yard field goal to give Detroit the early 3-0 advantage.

The Packers tried answering on their next series, but center Scott Wells fumbled as he tried to get the ball to Favre and it was recovered by the Lions' Anthony Bryant on the Green Bay 36.

However, on the second play of the Lions' offensive set, Kitna, looking for Roy Williams, had his pass intercepted by Al Harris at the Packers 38-yard line and returned to the Detroit 28. The Packers got the ball down to the 16 and Favre appeared to have a sure touchdown to David Martin in the front of the end zone, but the wideout dropped the ball. Green Bay had to settle for a 24-yard Dave Rayner field goal that tied the contest at 3-3 with 2:54 remaining in the opening quarter.

Following a Lions punt, Green Bay appeared to be on its way to putting more points on the board. Beginning from the their own 33-yard line, Favre connected on five passes, guiding the Pack down to the Detroit 10. However, Green was stopped for a four-yard loss on the next play, then the Green Bay signal-caller, looking for Green across the middle on a short pass, threw high and had it intercepted by Jamar Fletcher at the Lions 12 and returned five yards.

After a three-and-out by the Detroit offense, the Packers got the ball back starting on their own 47-yard line. Favre connected on a nine-yard pass to Driver and three plays later found Driver again for a 17-yard hookup that moved the ball down to the Lions 41. Following four more completions, Morency capped the nine-play, 53-yard drive when he ran around right end for a 14-yard touchdown to give the Packers a 10-3 lead with 5:24 left in the second quarter.

Detroit tried answering on its next set as Kitna led the offense down to the Green Bay 31-yard line. However, the Lions elected to got for it on a four- and-one and Kitna fumbled and it was recovered by the Packers' Cullen Jenkins at the Detroit 34.

Green Bay started the second half by going three-and-out and the Lions responded by putting points on the board. Hanson kicked a 42-yard field goal to put the finishing touches on an eight-play, 40-yard drive that cut the Packers' lead to 10-6.

Detroit went back to the offense late in the third quarter. On the first play of the series Kitna had his pass picked off by Charles Woodson at the Lions 42-yard line and returned to the 24. A face mask penalty advanced the ball to the 12. But after two incompletions by Favre, he tried forcing one into Martin and had it intercepted by Paris Lenon in the end zone.

The Lions couldn't mount any offense again, going three-and-out and forced to kick. Nick Harris's punt was downed by special teamer Eddie Drummond on the Packers' one-yard line.

After two minimal running plays by Green, Favre, scrambling in his own end zone, had his pass intended for Green go off the running back's hands and picked off by Dre Bly at the Green Bay 12. Following another three-and-out, the Lions had to settle for another field goal by Hanson, this one a 24-yard effort that cut the Packers' lead to 10-9 with 9:36 left in the fourth quarter.

Green Bay answered with a score on its next offensive series. Starting at their own 22, the Packers used a strong running attack to march 78-yards on 12 plays. Morency found the end zone once again, this time running it in from 21 yards out to give the Pack a 17-9 advantage with 2:55 remaining in the contest.

MySportsbook.com: NBA Championship Odds

With the playoffs about two months away, the top two teams in the Western Conference are the clear cut leaders to win the NBA Championship. The Dallas Mavericks have the best record in the NBA (44-9) and have been absolutely scorching since the second week of the season.  What makes the Mavs’ record more impressive is the fact that they dropped their first four games of the season.  Currently they have won 17 out of their last 18 and are MySportsbook.com’s favorite (2-1) to win it all.  Right behind the Mavs are the Pacific leading Phoenix Suns (39-13).  Last season, the Suns lost in the Conference Finals to non-other then the Mavericks four games to two.  Of course the Suns were without center Amare Stoudemire who has is averaging 19.9 PPG and 9.5 RPG since coming back from his knee injury.  Unlike the Mavs, the Suns have struggled a bit lately having lost their last three and four out of their last seven.  Of course the main reason for their three straight loses is due to the absence of two time MVP Steve Nash, who is out with a shoulder injury.  Heads-up, the Mavs have beaten the Suns in both of their meetings this season.

In the Eastern Conference, the Pistons (32-19) are the favorites to win it all at 6-1. The addition of Chris Webber seems to have been a good move for the Pistons.  Since coming over from the 76ers, Webber has averaged 13.1 PPG and 7.3 RPG and the Pistons are 11-4.  Even though the defending champion Heat are currently on the playoff making cusp, they are the Eastern Conference team that is getting the most action to win it all (9-1).  The fact that Shaquille O’Neal is back in the starting lineup after missing 39 games probably has something to do with this.  No doubt, Shaq makes a difference when in the lineup as their winning six out of their last seven would indicate.
