08/11/2007 - Falkirk, Scotland (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Kenny Miller, Shunsuke Nakamura and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink each scored to lead Celtic over Falkirk, 4-1, in Gordon Strachan's 100th competitive match for the Glasgow club on Saturday.
The defending champs earned their first win of the season after playing to a 0-0 draw in their Scottish Premier League opener last weekend.
"It was a terrific win for us," Strachan said.
Michael Higdon scored the sole goal for Falkirk, which suffered its first loss after defeating Gretna, 4-0, last weekend.
Higdon opened up the scoring in the fifth minute to put Falkirk ahead with his league-leading third goal of the season. Steven Thomson sent a cross in the box and Higdon was able to break free near the post and head the ball into the back of the net.
Celtic's first goal of the season came courtesy of an own goal by Kenny Milne in the 30th minute to knot the match at 1.
The game remained tied until the Celtic offense broke the affair open with three goals in five minutes. Miller started the scoring parade in the 76th minute when he followed a rebound off the post and blasted it in.
Then in the 79th minute, Nakamura placed a free kick into the top corner of the net to push the Celtic edge to 3-1.
Hesselink capped the scoring in the 81st minute with a shot from close range.
"We had many chances throughout the game, it just fell in place," Strachan said.
Mark Brown got the start in net for Celtic as Artur Boruc is still nursing a shoulder injury. Scott McDonald also missed the match for Celtic due to a suspension.
Before the match there was a moment of silence at Westfield Stadium to mourn the recent death of former Falkirk player Forbes Johnstone, who played with the club in the early 1990's.
In another nice gesture, both teams wore yellow ribbons to mark the 100th day since the disappearance of 4-year-old Madeleine McCann, a British girl who went missing from a Portuguese resort hotel in May,
Celtic was happy with the win, but it must stay focused as it prepares for a Champions League qualifier with Spartak Moscow on Wednesday before returning to domestic action next Sunday against Aberdeen.
"It's a good big week for us, very exciting," Strachan said.
In other SPL action on Saturday, Gretna allowed four goals for the second straight game in a 4-2 loss to Hibernian, Ross McCormack converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute to lift Motherwell over Inverness 2-1 and Rangers remained perfect with 2-0 victory over St. Mirren.
The second week of the SPL will be capped off with Aberdeen welcoming Hearts to town on Sunday, and Dundee United making the trip to Kilmarnock on Monday.
